Activities, along the coast and inland.
Surfing and snorkelling begin a short drive away; the tea and cinnamon factories, the elephants and Sigiriya make a full day inland. We arrange the ride.
Surfing
A short drive away, Weligama Bay offers long, forgiving waves for beginners, while the reef breaks of Mirissa and Hiriketiya provide consistent waves for more experienced surfers. Local surf schools based along the beaches offer board rentals and lessons, as well as private instruction for beginners.
Snorkelling & Diving
The reefs of Unawatuna, a short trip from the villa, are home to reef fish, sea turtles and coral gardens in warm, clear water. PADI-certified dive centres nearby offer courses and guided dives to wrecks and deeper sites.
The Doctor's House
About 900 metres from the villa, right at the water’s edge, stands The Doctor’s House — the best-known beach bar on this stretch of coast. Good food, cocktails and live music above the ocean; it is a few minutes on foot.
Badora Spa
Badora Spa in Mirissa offers Ayurvedic massage — an old Sri Lankan practice built on local herbs and oils. A good place to go after a day of surfing, or a long flight. We arrange the appointment for you.
Thelijjawila Snake Farm
The snake farm at Thelijjawila is a short drive from the villa. A keeper shows Sri Lanka’s snakes and explains how people here live alongside them. More than one visitor has faced down their fear of snakes here. Ask at the house and we will arrange the ride.
Tsara Tea Factory
At the Tsara tea factory you can follow Ceylon tea from bush to cup — picking, withering, rolling and sorting, each step in the open. The visit ends with a tasting of the teas made in that same building. We arrange the drive and book the visit ahead.
Rathna Ceylon Cinnamon Factory
True Ceylon cinnamon grows along this southern coast. At the Rathna cinnamon factory the whole craft happens in front of you — peeling the bark, drying it, rolling it into quills — and you can buy straight from the makers. We arrange the visit.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
The orphanage at Pinnawala cares for elephants left without a herd or injured in the wild. Visitors watch the herd at close range — the feeding, and the daily bathing in the river. It is a full day’s drive from Matara, so we plan it together with you.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
Sigiriya, the Lion Rock, is a fifth-century royal citadel on a rock some 180 metres high. More than a thousand steps lead up past the lion’s paws, the famous frescoes and the mirror wall. It is a full day’s drive from Matara, so we plan it together with you.
Millennium Elephant Foundation
This sanctuary in Sabaragamuwa Province cares for elderly and rescued elephants. Visitors walk alongside the animals and watch them bathe in the river. It is a full day’s drive from Matara, so we plan it together with you.
